How do I choose the right SPC flooring for my project - the Material Depot 6-point framework?

Choosing the right SPC out of 1,500+ options on Material Depot's floor can feel overwhelming. The framework below is exactly what our in-store design team uses every day. Work through these six decisions in order - by the end you'll have narrowed the field to 5-8 SKUs to compare in person.

DECISION 1 - WEAR LAYER THICKNESS (most important spec, often hidden in fine print):

The wear layer is the transparent vinyl shield above the decor print. It determines how long the floor lasts before visible scuffing, scratching or print exposure. Pay attention to this above all else.

1. 0.3mm wear layer - entry-level, suitable for bedrooms only, low-traffic rooms, rental properties, budget projects. Typically 10-12 year warranty.

2. 0.4-0.5mm - standard residential. Use this for full-home residential including living, dining, family rooms. 15-20 year warranty.

3. 0.5-0.7mm - high-traffic residential (kitchens, entries, large families with pets) and light commercial. 20-25 year warranty.

4. 0.7mm and above - commercial use, retail floors, restaurants, offices.

DECISION 2 - PLANK THICKNESS:

1. 4mm - budget tier. Works on perfectly level subfloors. Hides almost no imperfection.

2. 5mm - the recommended default for residential. Better acoustics, slight subfloor tolerance.

3. 5.5-6mm - premium tier. Better acoustic performance, hides minor subfloor imperfections (up to 2mm dips), feels more substantial underfoot.

DECISION 3 - DESIGN FAMILY:

1. WOOD LOOK (oak, walnut, teak, smoked oak) - the safest, most versatile choice. Ages well visually, works with almost any interior style. Choose this for 80% of projects.

2. HERRINGBONE OR CHEVRON - design-statement choice. Best in foyer, living room, master bedroom, study. Adds 2-3x visual impact vs straight-lay wood.

3. MARBLE / STONE - premium alternative to real marble at 1/4 the price. Excellent for kitchens, bathrooms, foyers.

4. PLAIN / SOLID - minimal, contemporary. Use in commercial, very modern apartments.

DECISION 4 - PLANK SIZE:

1. Wide plank (180-220mm width × 1200-1500mm length) - best for larger rooms, contemporary aesthetic, makes the floor look luxurious.

2. Standard (150-180mm × 1200mm) - works in most Indian homes.

3. Narrow (130-150mm) - best for traditional aesthetics or smaller rooms where wide planks would look out of scale.

4. Smaller tile sizes (600x100mm for herringbone, 600x600mm for stone look).

DECISION 5 - FINISH:

1. MATTE - the most premium, most popular for high-end residential. Hides scratches, looks like oil-finished real wood.

2. EMBOSSED-IN-REGISTER (EIR) - the texture aligns with the printed grain. Most realistic underfoot feel. Look for this on premium ranges.

3. BRUSHED - fine linear texture, very natural wood feel.

4. SATIN - soft sheen, mid-formality.

5. GLOSS - only in specific commercial showroom contexts.

DECISION 6 - BRAND TIER AND BUDGET:

1. Indian-manufactured brands (Floorich, Welspun, etc.): Rs 80-130 per sq ft material cost. Good value, 10-15 year warranties.

2. Korean-manufactured (LG Hausys, premium Korean): Rs 130-200 per sq ft. Excellent durability, 15-20 year warranties.

3. European-manufactured (German, Belgian, premium Pergo, Quick-Step): Rs 200-400 per sq ft. Best-in-class performance, 20-25 year warranties.
